What Is Executive Coaching?

Updated: May 20

Increase Leadership & Improve Communication Skills

Coaching helps bring out the potential of your staff. Use it to deal with immediate problems, as a constructive way to interact with your staff, and as an aid to their long-term development. The results are exponential.

Executive Coaching is the art of improving the performance of others. Companies who hire coaches encourage their leaders and teams to learn from and be challenged by their work. By working with a coach, companies create the conditions for continuous development by helping your staff to define and achieve goals.

How Coaching Works

The coaching process closes the gap between an individual's or team's present level of performance and the desired one. This can happen within a single coaching session, or over a long cycle of sessions. Your coach will help develop your employees by mutually assessing performance, discuss the present situation, define achievable goals, explore new initiatives, and support a coachee in their plan of action.

Coaching Qualities

An effective coach listens first, asks searching questions, and is ready to generate creative ideas that motivates a coachee to action.

Coaching will help teach your employees to adopt a positive approach to learning by encouraging them to say what they think.

Good coaches avoid trying to tell people what to do, but, instead, help them choose the best route to succeed in their objectives.

Bringing Out Potential

By asking searching questions I help my clients gain a greater self-awareness. They become aware of their strengths and weaknesses. I help them build on their strengths and to develop new skills, so that they can take on new challenges.

As their competence and confidence improve, their self-esteem grows, and they will take more initiative in meeting agreed goals. Increasingly, by using all of their abilities and expressing their potential to the full, your whole team will benefit.

Work with a coach to achieve increased productivity

Developing Positive Attitudes in Staff

When people's self-confidence and motivation grow, they take on more challenging assignments. They prove to themselves that they can handle these challenges, and they are able to solve many of the problems that inevitably arise. They know, if they run into trouble that, their coach will support them building a positive attitude to change.

Coaching can raise fear and distrust in those not familiar with it. Once people realize the benefits the misunderstanding is defused.

IN CLOSING - The Hawthorne Experiment

In the 1920's, physiologist Elton Mayo conducted experiments at the Hawthorne Electrical Works in Chicago. He was attempting to prove his theory that better lighting led to greater productivity. First Mayo had the lights turned up on the factory floor. As he expected, production levels went up too. Mayo had proven his theory - or had he?

As an afterthought, he decided to turn the lights down to see what would happen. To his surprise production levels went up again! He found that whatever he did with the lighting, production went up.

Mayo discussed his findings with the workers involved. They said that the interest shown in them by Mayo and his researchers had made them feel more valued. They were used to being ignored. The increase in morale led to an improvement in productivity.

This effect is known as the "Hawthorne Effect".
